Lend a helping hand

Hi guys! I'll like to share this story with you guys. Hope you guys will spend abit of your time reading it :)

SEEING LIFE THROUGH DEATH

He greeted us with a warm smile as we stepped into his house. As he shared a joke with our staff nurse, it was clear that a strong rapport existed between them. Living with him in a 3-room HDB flat in Bedok, are his wife and four well-behaved children, aged 9 to 16. Like any typical family who lives, works and plays in this place, the home displays a picture of warmth and hope.

Yet hidden behind this cheerful character, are the inner struggles he goes through each day, worrying for the future of his family.

Because, Mr Hanafiah Bin Ahmad aged 42, does not know how much time he has left.

He was diagnosed with 4th-stage colon cancer and has been on the SCS Hospice Home Care services since July 2007. Our nurses visit him once every three weeks to control the symptoms of his illness and provide psychological support. His family has a history of colon cancer. It was at the funeral of his brother four years ago that he learnt about cancer.

"My brother was reduced to skin and bones. I asked what did this to him,and they told me that it was cancer," he recalled.

The doctor told him and his siblings to get screened for colorectal cancer, but they did not heed the advice due to the family's financial plight.

Mr Hanafiah noticed the first sign of something amiss when he passed out blood during his usual visit to toilet. Still, he waited out for three months before seeking medicial attention at Changi General Hospital. Seeing that the disease had taken the life of his siblings, he then decided to go for a check-up for the sake of his family.

In 2007, he underwent chemotherapy and suffered adverse side-effects after one to two threatments. Faced with finacial difficulties, he decided to drop out of the treatment altogether. Although he knew fully well that without treatment, his life expectancy would be shortened.

Throughout the interview, it was clear that Mr Hanafiah loves his childrens very much. His wife had spoken to them about his sickness, but they did not know the severity of his condition.

"I do not want my illness to affect their studies. Because they are very understanding children, they will worry," he said.

His only daughter has noticed that he does not watch her do homework, like he did before.

Now, his wife supports the family with an income of a few hundred dollars from an ad-hoc job as a helper in Malay restaurant. At the same time, she is also preparing the children emotionally when the time comes.

As the interview came to a close, when asked what he worries most after departs, he replied "my daughter". Because "there will be no father to protect her".

At this, tears welled up in his eyes, breaking down the stoic composure awhile ago.

This story makes me tears. Not everyone will understand how terrible is the feeling without a father.

How scary cancer can be. We must be happy and glad that we're healthy. We can do something to help them. By giving your helping hands, or even donation.

For those who is 21 and above, there's a monthly donation.
